I TOOK THE LONG WAY HOME

How much easier life might have been had I let the inner child lead me- the inner child who was once so close to God. If I had, perhaps I would have chosen the right path. My life may have been simpler, and certainly sweeter.

But, I didn’t. I took the long way around. And, in doing so, neglected the most important part of me.

Here’s the thing (and I don’t know why this isn’t emphasized to us as children):  not only are we born with a soul, we are meant to protect it. When we choose rightly- as God would have us choose- we nourish the soul. But when we turn away and choose poorly, choosing what is not of God, we not only distance ourselves from Him, we harm our soul.

In OCIA, I learned that harm to the soul is taken seriously because the soul is the part of us that lasts forever. It is created by God and meant for eternal life with Him- not something to be neglected or damaged. The evening we discussed this, I realized that all those years I chose to do what I wanted- outside of what God wanted- had led me down a longer road of unhappiness. And that night, I understood that focusing on myself, rather than on what is true and good, was the reason I had made far too many mistakes.

Luckily, Catholics believe the soul can be wounded, but never ruined; that healing begins with honesty and the courage to turn back toward God; and that through forgiveness and grace, what was broken is gently restored and the soul is made new again.

Fall Things!

GOOD MORNING, Y’ALL!!  The rain from Helene is still to the west of us, but it is a crisp 67 degrees & I feel the first fingers of fall.

On our walk this morning, Pokie & I counted 23 squirrels running about collecting the nuts blown about by the wind!  (My first thought was, “these squirrels are going  nuts” & laughed so loudly pup had to find him a spot.)

I’ve no idea what kind of wildflowers are growing along the road, but they are beautiful.

The hawk who terrorized the neighborhood all summer wasn’t to be found.

However, I spied two tiny birds I’ve never seen before & will have to look them up. (In a book I gifted myself this summer.😉)

Now for settling in with my first cappuccino of the season & a little writing on the Dauphin Island novel.

❤️Go ahead, ask me how hyped I am that it is going to come a monstrous downpour – fOr hOuRs -on my writing day!!

I feel Fall!!!

NEGATIVITY—-BITES!!

Let your words be positive, your actions kind. Otherwise, say nothing, and do nothing.

😅So says the woman who will grab a sledgehammer to drive in a 23-gauge pin nail.

❤️It’s a struggle for me too, every single day.

NO, LIFE IS NOT FAIR.

In a world rich with possibilities, it’s distressing to acknowledge that many children face harsh realities that overshadow their laughter and dreams. From poverty and violence to neglect and discrimination, countless young lives are marred by circumstances beyond their control. Yet, amidst these challenges, we witness incredible accounts of courage and determination- CENTIPEDE is one such story.

Back when I was teaching sixth grade language arts, my students discovered I was writing my first novel and asked if I would write a #YAnovel for them.  I thought about the trials so many children face today, and as I did, my main character Willa (Willie) Cather Jennings was born.

It is wondrous how easily Willie came into existence! And as strange as it may sound, as the story formed, I found myself in awe of this impoverished twelve year old girl who possessed such emotional resilience and moral fortitude.

Children are often forced to grow up too quickly, shouldering responsibilities they should not bear.

There are many lessons to be learned from a child. Join me today for Willie’s story!

Driving Florida’s Forgotten Coast is something I’ve wanted to do for years.  For a couple of days, my cousin Dana & I roamed Port St Joe, Apalachicola & Cape San Blas  while Chris was gator hunting!

After he got his gator, they packed & I decided to take the long way home.

For me, there is nothing more thrilling than being on the road, exploring new places!

THE JOY OF TRAVEL

~ Travel helps us discover a better version of ourselves!  Here is the thing, it doesn’t need to be a planned out, lengthy or an expensive vacation! The best trips are road trips taken close to home. They are cost friendly, a break from the norm, laid back & relaxing.

Whether it is a nearby town, historic site or the country you’ve dreamed of visiting, traveling is a holistic experience that enriches us physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Exploring new places often involves walking and engaging in activities which propel us beyond our regular routines, thus improving our overall well-being.

Adventure presses us to move beyond our comfort zones, and in doing so provides a new perspective, encourages creativity and reduces stress!

Besides, the memories we garner from traveling are some of the sweetest. Meeting new people and enjoying new experiences is really what it’s all about!

Central Park, Journal

This morning, I was cleaning out my desk and found the following journal entry I paused to write while walking in Central Park. The entry didn’t make it into WE SHARE THE SAME SKY, a memoir.

***

At last, I have found a place that bears a resemblance to home -Central Park!

I cannot live without trees, trees and leaves, leaves, oh, beautiful leaves.

A sudden peace fills me, and reaching up, I pluck one from a nearby low limb.

My intentions are to press it and put it away in a book so that one day when it is pulled down from its shelf, the page will fall open to this reminder, a token of a worthwhile week in the city.

The words to my favorite Walt Whitman poem dance across my mind.

“…All alone stood it, and the moss hung down from the branches; without any companion it grew there, uttering joyous leaves of dark green…”

The light here in the park is different than that within the rest of the city. Nature reflects it differently. Or perhaps it is that it is absorbed more, rather than reflected.

And, the sounds are more familiar to my heart. I can hear the laughter of children at play on the lawn, birds in the distance calling to one another from beneath the overhang of tree limbs, like the children -dancing, chirping.

And suddenly, as though from nowhere in particular, I am hungry for home.

***

10 p.m. and I am back at the room, trying to find the name of the tree. Bark- dark grayish brown & rough, large dark green leaves. I flip through the pages of my field guide; back and forth I go. I find it and laugh loudly!

It is the Kentucky Coffeetree!

There is no getting away from the South!!

TIME AWAY

I can’t even begin to explain my love of the water! There is no place I would rather be.  Sometimes, just getting away for a while- even if it is only a few days – gives you the brief respite needed to unwind, gather your thoughts, relax and smile!!

Thank you, Dana & Chris!

A Gift for My Daughter & Embracing the Joy of Creating Art!

✨ There’s something truly magical about picking up a pencil or a brush and letting your creativity flow onto a blank canvas. The act of drawing, painting or writing not only brings peace to your mind but also holds incredible power to positively impact your mental health and happiness! 🎨

Studies have shown that engaging in art-making activities can reduce stress, anxiety, and even symptoms of depression. The meditative process of creating art allows us to focus on the present moment, quieting the noise of the world around us. It’s a form of self-expression that can uplift our spirits and bring a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. 🌿💖

Moreover, art pieces often become mementos of a specific time in our lives, much like a diary entry capturing our emotions and experiences. They serve as reminders of our growth, our struggles, and our joys, encapsulating a moment in a beautifully crafted image. 📔🎨

So, let’s continue to embrace the joy of creating art, not just for the final product but for the therapeutic journey it offers. Let your imagination run wild, and remember, every stroke holds a piece of your story. ✨ #ArtTherapy #CreativeExpression #MentalHealthMatters #HappinessInArt #ArtisticJourney #MindfulCreation #meditation
