Odessa: “I’m not sure if it’s an angel who visits me in the night. All I know is I pray for knowledge, to see things as they really are. Then the insight comes, and I see people and events clearly, and It makes me sick. It makes me sad. Seldom do the revelations bring me joy. I get to feeling life is just one big lie.
Momma, can you hear me? I try so hard to be good like you. But, I’m not so sure anymore who I am meant to be. All those years you suffered glimpses of what was to come. And yet, you were strong. Momma- Bizet, can you hear me?”

Up early for a walk in light rain & stopping often to jot down quotes for BORN TO SUN. I’m standing here in the road wearing a mask (allergens in the Deep South are deadly) & on my phone. But, clearly I have no choice for once the characters are created, they never stop talking. And, if I don’t pause to write it down, it is gone.
This morning it is the voice of Auntie (Ms. Fomby) who will not be quiet.
“I have walked through life with a wounded heart and it has made what could have been beautiful, miserable.” Ms. Fomby, ‘Auntie’
The setting ✔️ #DauphinIsland
The plot ✔️ #WontTell
The characters ✔️~ The more they talk, the more concrete & real they become. You have to have the main plot down first, otherwise these people take over! And THAT is what makes #writing wonderful.

From this morning’s reading: “I walked across an open field at winter’s break as the sun danced on the last few drifts. I imagined my fears would melt one by one as I learned to love myself.” L.Lewis
Just as we enjoy the change of seasons, we must pause and appreciate the varying stages of our lives.
How often I awaken and rush into my ‘to do’ list without taking a moment to read, reflect, look about appreciatively at my surroundings, my life. There is much to be thankful for.

I am not writing. I am relaxing!
There was a time -when looking upon trees – that I wanted nothing more than to climb to the highest branches, or curl up beneath with a good book. (Part of that was a long time ago.)
I am soaking up every minute I have of these peaceful mornings. Thank goodness for the trees and the birds, and the books.
“Practicing faith promises that we will begin to feel successful in all our experiences because we are walking through them peacefully, trusting that God is at hand. Believing in God, being truly faithful, can be the greatest success of our lives.”
This little blue book was picked up and purchased when I needed it most. If I had opened the front cover and realized it was written for those struggling with ‘addictions’ I would have thought it didn’t apply to me, and foolishly, I would have set it aside. It is a wonderful guide to seeing life clearly, dealing with the highs and lows that come our way – the uncertainty of life. It teaches that we must trust that everything is as it should be, and that all along our travel through this life, there must be lessons. ~ After all, that is the whole point- isn’t it?
Carve out a few minutes every day just for yourself. It has been too long since I last sat quietly in this room & I have missed it.
Make quiet time for yourself in a space that makes you happy.
This room is me. I enjoy the bright light, my plants, books, my humble breakfast of peanut butter & saltine crackers, a too strong cappuccino, and soft classical cello.
Go find your place, take your time & be happy ~ and of course, grateful.
MEN LIKE HIM didn’t wait for the draft, but rushed forward, motivated by beliefs instilled so deeply within that they could never be quieted. God, Country, Family and then Self -this was the code my grandfather lived by.
He and his fellow soldiers led by example. Their leadership, and willingness to fight for our country, revealed their loyalty and carried our nation through ominous times.
My grandfather’s memoir chronicles his service as a soldier during the Italian Campaign, from Anzio to the Po Valley, with the 135th Infantry.
Short stories are scattered throughout and include: arriving in Casa Blanca, the Anzio landing, hand-to-hand combat with a lone German soldier, rescuing an unknown G.I., singing gospel songs as he and his buddies sat around their foxholes and watched phosphorus shells bursting overhead – there are these, and so many more.
Never will I forget sitting near as he shared his stories of Anzio and the brave men he called ‘buddies,’ nor will I forget the sacrifice he so willingly made for our country—for these men who went off willingly to fight, were the truest leaders of our great nation.
